Start channels, direct messages, and threads

Create a channel, choose who can use it, and start direct conversations or replies.

Chat

Use a channel for a shared conversation and a direct message for a conversation with selected people. Reply in a thread to keep a discussion attached to its original message.

Before you start

Creating channels and starting direct conversations through the creation form requires workspace Member, Admin, or Owner standing. To create a channel inside a folder, open the folder and use its New resource button; you need Can edit or Full access on that folder. Posting in a channel requires Can comment or higher access; direct conversations require participation.

Create a channel

  1. In the sidebar, select the Communication tab.
  2. In Channels, select New resource, the plus beside the section name. Zanbase creates an untitled channel and opens it.
  3. Select the title and type the channel’s name.

A new top-level channel is open to everyone in the workspace. To restrict it, open its menu, select Share, set Everyone in workspace to No access, and add the people or teams who should stay. A channel inside a folder takes that folder’s access. Review roles and permissions before sharing.

Start a direct message

  1. In the sidebar, select New message.
  2. Select the recipients in People.
  3. Select Message.
  4. Write in Send a message.
  5. Select Send message, the send button.

The picker accepts one person for a direct message or up to nine people for a group.

Reply in a thread

  1. Open Message actions on the message.
  2. Select Reply in thread.
  3. Write your reply in Send a message.
  4. Select Send message, the send button.

Good to know

A direct conversation is available to its participants. A workspace administration role does not grant access to other people’s direct conversations. Use message search and pins to return to useful messages.
